# Sign in person

Have someone sign on your own tablet, laptop or phone while they're with you, such as a client at your front desk or a family at an arrangement meeting.

You stay signed in and host the signing. The signer only ever sees the signing screens.

## Add an in-person signer

In the envelope editor's **Recipients** stage:

1. Click **Add in-person signer**, or change an existing row's role to **In-person signer**
2. Enter their name. An email is optional and is only used to send them their copy.
3. Check the **Host** on their row. It's you by default. To have a colleague host, choose them from the list. The host must be a member of your workspace.

In-person signers get fields like any other signer, and they're never emailed a signing link or reminders.

On a template, click **Add in-person role**. Whoever uses the template hosts by default.

To have a code texted to the signer's own phone before they sign, open their row's **⋯** menu, click **Signer verification…** and choose **A code sent by text message**. This needs a plan with signer verification. See [Plans and billing](/docs/plans-and-billing).

## Host the signing

When it's the in-person signer's turn:

1. Open the envelope and click **Start in-person signing**
2. Choose a 4-digit PIN. Starting confirms the signer is here with you.
3. The device shows **Hand the device to Mary**. Give it to them.
4. They tap **Start**, agree to sign electronically and sign. If you required a texted code, they enter it first.
5. They then tap **Next** to pass the device to the next in-person signer, or hand it back to you
6. Enter your PIN. You see who has signed. Click **Back to the envelope** to finish

Signers pass the device to each other without the PIN. Getting back to your screens always needs it. If the wrong person has the device, tap **Stop** on the handover screen: nothing is signed, and the device asks for your PIN. You can then hand it over again.

While you're hosting, the device shows only the signing screens. Any other page in eSignStack leads back to them until you enter your PIN and click **Back to the envelope**.

### If you forget the PIN

On the PIN screen, click **Sign in again**. You're signed out, and signing back in with your password ends the in-person signing. Anyone who hasn't finished can sign in a new session.

After 5 wrong PINs, you're signed out the same way. A session left running for 8 hours also signs you out.

## Several signers and mixed envelopes

Several in-person signers can sign one after another on the same device. Use **Sign in order** to set their order.

An envelope can mix in-person and remote signers. Everyone acts in the routing order: for example, a family signs in person at step 1 and a relative who lives elsewhere gets an email at step 2. See [Recipients and roles](/docs/recipients-and-roles#signing-order).

## What's recorded

The audit trail and the signing certificate record:

- who hosted, and that the host confirmed the signer was with them when they handed over the device. When one signer passes the device to the next, that's recorded as the signer's handover, not the host's.
- when the host's PIN was entered, any wrong PINs, and a lockout
- the signer's consent to sign electronically, their signature and the times
- whether a texted code was verified

The certificate says, for example, "Signed in person, hosted by Jane Smith". The host is never recorded as the signer. Hosting records who handed over the device; it doesn't verify the signer's ID.

## Correct an in-person signer

Before the device is handed to them, you can fix an in-person signer's name or email, or change their host, with **Correct recipients** on the envelope's page. See [Send and track](/docs/sending-for-signature#correct-a-sent-envelope).

## Through the API and MCP

The API and MCP can create envelopes and templates with in-person signers. Set `type` to `in_person_signer` and `host_email` to the email of a workspace member. The signing itself always happens in the app, on the host's device.
