Fair use

Unlimited in-app sending is subject to fair use: normal use by your own organization. If an account's volume looks unusual, we may get in touch.

How envelopes are counted

An envelope counts once, when it's sent. Drafts don't count, and voiding or deleting an envelope later doesn't give it back. An envelope counts once however many documents or recipients it has.

Each envelope is counted on one of three channels:

Channel What it covers
In the app Envelopes a member sends from eSignStack
Kiosk and links Envelopes a signer starts from a kiosk, QR code or direct link. Each submission is its own envelope and counts when the signer starts it.
API and MCP Envelopes sent through /api/v1, MCP or an editor session

If the API creates a signing session for an envelope that was sent in the app or from a link, that envelope moves to the API channel and counts toward the API allowance. This happens once per envelope.

On Free, all three channels count toward the same 5 envelopes. On Starter, Pro and Platform, only API and MCP envelopes count. In-app and kiosk sends are unlimited.

Usage belongs to the account that owns the workspace. Envelopes your members send in your workspaces count toward your plan. In a platform's customer workspaces, API and MCP envelopes count toward the platform's Platform plan. Sandbox envelopes never count. See Sandbox.

When allowances reset

Paid allowances follow your billing period. On a yearly plan, you get the full year's API allowance up front: 600 on Starter, 2,400 on Pro and 6,000 on Platform. Free resets every month on the day you signed up.

Reaching a limit

  • Free: sending pauses until your allowance resets. Kiosk and link signers see a message asking them to contact the sender.
  • Starter and Pro: API and MCP sending pauses until the reset. Sending in the app isn't affected.
  • Platform: API and MCP sends continue as extras. See Extra API envelopes.

The account owner gets an email at 80% and at 100% of each allowance, once per period.

When an allowance refuses an API or MCP send, the API returns 422 with error.code: "validation_failed". error.quota.code says which limit was hit: envelope_limit_reached, api_envelope_limit_reached, api_overage_unavailable or api_spending_cap_reached. error.quota.resets_at says when it resets.

Checking usage

Settings → Billing shows your current plan and usage for this period:

  • On Free, Usage shows envelopes used and remaining.
  • On paid plans, API and MCP shows API usage, any extras and the reset date. Sent in the app shows in-app and kiosk sends, which aren't counted.

The API returns the same numbers at GET /api/v1/usage in api_envelopes. The key needs the usage:read ability. See the API reference.

Change your plan

Open Settings → Billing and use the Monthly and Yearly switch to compare prices. Yearly costs 10 times the monthly price.

  • Get started with a plan opens checkout the first time you subscribe.
  • Upgrade to a plan takes effect right away. You're charged the prorated difference for the rest of the period.
  • Downgrade to a paid plan takes effect right away, with a prorated credit on your next invoice.
  • Switch to yearly billing or Switch to monthly billing changes the interval right away, with prorated adjustments.

Before you confirm, the dialog lists anything you'll lose, such as kiosk mode or a lower API allowance.

If a lower plan allows fewer workspaces, your oldest workspaces stay active and the rest become read-only until you upgrade. Existing members keep access, but you can't invite more than the plan allows.

Cancel

Select Cancel subscription, or Downgrade to Free. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period, then the account moves to Free. Select Resume subscription before then to keep it.

Deleting your account ends any subscription immediately. See Sign-in and security.

Payments and invoices

Select Update payment method to change your card in the billing portal. Invoice history lists past invoices to download.

Failed payments

If a payment fails, we email the account owner and show a Payment failed banner. Your plan stays active while the payment is retried. On Platform, extra API envelopes pause until the invoice is paid.

If the retries fail, the plan is paused and the account uses Free limits. Update your payment method and pay the open invoice to restore it.

Extra API envelopes

Note

Available on Platform.

After the 500 included API and MCP envelopes, each extra envelope is 25¢, billed on your next invoice. Settings → Billing shows how many extras you've sent this period and the estimated amount.

Limit extras each month

Under Limit on extra API envelopes, turn on Limit extras each month and enter a Monthly limit in dollars. The page shows roughly how many extra envelopes that covers. Select Save limit.

  • The limit is off until you turn it on.
  • It resets monthly, including on yearly plans.
  • You get an email at 80% and at 100% of the limit.
  • At the limit, extra API and MCP sending pauses until the reset. Sending in the app isn't affected.
  • A limit of $0 stops API sending at your included allowance.

Moving from Platform to another plan stops extras and bills any that haven't been invoiced yet.
